1. Now Sarah lived 127 years; these were all the years of her life.

2. Sarah died in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
|
2. And Sarah H8283 died H4191 in Kirjath H7153 -arba ; the same H1931 is Hebron H2275 in the land H776 of Canaan H3667 : and Abraham H85 came H935 to mourn H5594 for Sarah H8283 , and to weep H1058 for her.

3. Then Abraham got up from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites:

3. And Abraham H85 stood up H6965 from before H4480 H5921 H6440 his dead H4191 , and spoke H1696 unto H413 the sons H1121 of Heth H2845 , saying H559 ,

4. "I am a resident alien among you. Give me a burial site among you so that I can bury my dead."
|
4. I H595 am a stranger H1616 and a sojourner H8453 with H5973 you: give H5414 me a possession H272 of a burial place H6913 with H5973 you , that I may bury H6912 my dead H4191 out of my sight H4480 H6440 .

5. The Hittites replied to Abraham,

5. And the children H1121 of Heth H2845 answered H6030 H853 Abraham H85 , saying H559 unto him,
|
|
6. "Listen to us, lord. You are God's chosen one among us. Bury your dead in our finest burial place. None of us will withhold from you his burial place for burying your dead."
|
6. Hear H8085 us , my lord H113 : thou H859 art a mighty H430 prince H5387 among H8432 us : in the choice H4005 of our sepulchers H6913 bury H6912 H853 thy dead H4191 ; none H376 H3808 of H4480 us shall withhold H3607 from H4480 thee H853 his sepulcher H6913 , but that thou mayest bury H4480 H6912 thy dead H4191 .

7. Then Abraham rose and bowed down to the Hittites, the people of the land.
|
7. And Abraham H85 stood up H6965 , and bowed himself H7812 to the people H5971 of the land H776 , even to the children H1121 of Heth H2845 .

8. He said to them, "If you are willing for me to bury my dead, listen to me and ask Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf
|
8. And he communed H1696 with H854 them, saying H559 , If H518 it be H3426 H853 your mind H5315 that I should bury H6912 H853 my dead H4191 out of my sight H4480 H6440 ; hear H8085 me , and entreat H6293 for me to Ephron H6085 the son H1121 of Zohar H6714 ,

9. to give me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me in your presence, for the full price, as a burial place."

9. That he may give H5414 me H853 the cave H4631 of Machpelah H4375 , which H834 he hath, which H834 is in the end H7097 of his field H7704 ; for as much money H3701 as it is worth H4392 he shall give H5414 it me for a possession H272 of a burial place H6913 amongst H8432 you.

10. Ephron was present with the Hittites. So in the presence of all the Hittites who came to the gate of his city, Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham:

10. And Ephron H6085 dwelt H3427 among H8432 the children H1121 of Heth H2845 : and Ephron H6085 the Hittite H2850 answered H6030 H853 Abraham H85 in the audience H241 of the children H1121 of Heth H2845 , even of all H3605 that went in H935 at the gate H8179 of his city H5892 , saying H559 ,

11. "No, my lord. Listen to me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead."

11. Nay H3808 , my lord H113 , hear H8085 me : the field H7704 give H5414 I thee , and the cave H4631 that H834 is therein , I give H5414 it thee ; in the presence H5869 of the sons H1121 of my people H5971 give H5414 I it thee: bury H6912 thy dead H4191 .

12. Abraham bowed down to the people of the land
|
12. And Abraham H85 bowed down himself H7812 before H6440 the people H5971 of the land H776 .
|
|
13. and said to Ephron in the presence of the people of the land, "Please listen to me. Let me pay the price of the field. Accept it from me, and let me bury my dead there."
|
13. And he spoke H1696 unto H413 Ephron H6085 in the audience H241 of the people H5971 of the land H776 , saying H559 , But H389 if H518 thou H859 wilt give it , I pray thee H3863 , hear H8085 me : I will give H5414 thee money H3701 for the field H7704 ; take H3947 it of H4480 me , and I will bury H6912 H853 my dead H4191 there H8033 .

14. Ephron answered Abraham and said to him,

14. And Ephron H6085 answered H6030 H853 Abraham H85 , saying H559 unto him,
|

15. "My lord, listen to me. Land worth 400 shekels of silver-- what is that between you and me? Bury your dead."
|
15. My lord H113 , hearken H8085 unto me : the land H776 is worth four H702 hundred H3967 shekels H8255 of silver H3701 ; what H4100 is that H1931 between H996 me and thee? bury H6912 therefore thy dead H4191 .

16. Abraham agreed with Ephron, and Abraham weighed out to Ephron the silver that he had agreed to in the hearing of the Hittites: 400 shekels of silver at the current commercial rate.
|
16. And Abraham H85 hearkened H8085 unto H413 Ephron H6085 ; and Abraham H85 weighed H8254 to Ephron H6085 H853 the silver H3701 , which H834 he had named H1696 in the audience H241 of the sons H1121 of Heth H2845 , four H702 hundred H3967 shekels H8255 of silver H3701 , current H5674 money with the merchant H5503 .

17. So Ephron's field at Machpelah near Mamre-- the field with its cave and all the trees anywhere within the boundaries of the field-- became

17. And the field H7704 of Ephron H6085 , which H834 was in Machpelah H4375 , which H834 was before H6440 Mamre H4471 , the field H7704 , and the cave H4631 which H834 was therein , and all H3605 the trees H6086 that H834 were in the field H7704 , that H834 were in all H3605 the borders H1366 round about H5439 , were made sure H6965

18. Abraham's possession in the presence of all the Hittites who came to the gate of his city.

18. Unto Abraham H85 for a possession H4736 in the presence H5869 of the children H1121 of Heth H2845 , before all H3605 that went in H935 at the gate H8179 of his city H5892 .

19. After this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field at Machpelah near Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

19. And after H310 this H3651 , Abraham H85 buried H6912 H853 Sarah H8283 his wife H802 in H413 the cave H4631 of the field H7704 of Machpelah H4375 before H5921 H6440 Mamre H4471 : the same H1931 is Hebron H2275 in the land H776 of Canaan H3667 .

20. The field with its cave passed from the Hittites to Abraham as a burial place.

20. And the field H7704 , and the cave H4631 that H834 is therein , were made sure H6965 unto Abraham H85 for a possession H272 of a burial place H6913 by H4480 H854 the sons H1121 of Heth H2845 .
