1. The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord (now Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the country of his dominion, were warring against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Juda,) saying,

Now it came to pass H1961 in the seventh H7637 month H2320 , that Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 the son H1121 of Elishama H476 , of the seed H4480 H2233 royal H4410 , and the princes H7227 of the king H4428 , even ten H6235 men H376 with H854 him, came H935 unto H413 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 to Mizpah H4708 ; and there H8033 they did eat H398 bread H3899 together H3162 in Mizpah H4709 .

2. Thus has the Lord said; Go to Sedekias king of Juda, and thou shalt say to him, Thus has the Lord said, This city shall certainly be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it, and shall burn it with fire:

Then arose H6965 Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 , and the ten H6235 men H376 that H834 were H1961 with H854 him , and smote H5221 H853 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 with the sword H2719 , and slew H4191 him, whom H834 the king H4428 of Babylon H894 had made governor H6485 over the land H776 .

3. and thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt certainly be taken, and shalt be given into his hands; and thine eyes shall see his eyes, Alex. +and thy mouth shall speak with his mouth and thou shalt enter into Babylon.

3. Ishmael H3458 also slew H5221 all H3605 the Jews H3064 that H834 were H1961 with H854 him, even with H854 Gedaliah H1436 , at Mizpah H4709 , and the Chaldeans H3778 that H834 were found H4672 there H8033 , and the men H376 of war H4421 .

4. But hear the word of the Lord, O Sedekias king of Juda; Thus saith the Lord,

4. And it came to pass H1961 the second H8145 day H3117 after he had slain H4191 H853 Gedaliah H1436 , and no H3808 man H376 knew H3045 it ,

5. Thou shalt die in peace: and as they wept for thy fathers that reigned before thee, they shall weep also for thee, saying, Ah lord! and they shall lament for thee Gr. as far as Hades down to the grave: for I have spoken the word, said the Lord.

5. That there came H935 certain H376 from Shechem H4480 H7927 , from Shiloh H4480 H7887 , and from Samaria H4480 H8111 , even fourscore H8084 men H376 , having their beards H2206 shaven H1548 , and their clothes H899 rent H7167 , and having cut themselves H1413 , with offerings H4503 and incense H3828 in their hand H3027 , to bring H935 them to the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 .

6. And Jeremias spoke to king Sedekias all these words in Jerusalem.

And Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 went forth H3318 from H4480 Mizpah H4709 to meet H7125 them, weeping H1058 all along as he went H1980 H1980 : and it came to pass H1961 , as he met H6298 them , he said H559 unto H413 them, Come H935 to H413 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 .

7. And the host of the king of Babylon warred against Jerusalem, and against the cities of Juda, Alex. that were left and against Lachis, and against Azeca: for these strong cities were left among the cities of Juda.

7. And it was H1961 so , when they came H935 into H413 the midst H8432 of the city H5892 , that Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 slew H7819 them, and cast them into H413 the midst H8432 of the pit H953 , he H1931 , and the men H376 that H834 were with H854 him.

8. The word that came from the Lord to Jeremias, after king Sedekias had concluded a covenant with the people, Alex. in Jerusalem to proclaim a release;

8. But ten H6235 men H376 were found H4672 among them that said H559 unto H413 Ishmael H3458 , Slay H4191 us not H408 : for H3588 we have H3426 treasures H4301 in the field H7704 , of wheat H2406 , and of barley H8184 , and of oil H8081 , and of honey H1706 . So he forbear H2308 , and slew H4191 them not H3808 among H8432 their brethren H251 .

9. That every one should set at liberty his servant, and every one has handmaid, the Hebrew man and Hebrew woman, that no man of Juda should be a bondman.

Now the pit H953 wherein H834 H8033 Ishmael H3458 had cast H7993 H853 all H3605 the dead bodies H6297 of the men H376 , whom H834 he had slain H5221 because H3027 of Gedaliah H1436 , was it H1931 which H834 Asa H609 the king H4428 had made H6213 for fear H4480 H6440 of Baasha H1201 king H4428 of Israel H3478 : and Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 filled H4390 it with them that were slain H2491 .

10. See Hebrew; Two verses put into one Then all the nobles, and all the people who had entered into the covenant, engaging to set free every one his man-servant, and every one his maid, turned,

Then Ishmael H3458 carried away captive H7617 H853 all H3605 the residue H7611 of the people H5971 that H834 were in Mizpah H4709 , even H853 the king H4428 's daughters H1323 , and all H3605 the people H5971 that remained H7604 in Mizpah H4709 , whom H834 Nebuzaradan H5018 the captain H7227 of the guard H2876 had committed H6485 to H853 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 : and Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 carried them away captive H7617 , and departed H1980 to go over H5674 to H413 the Ammonites H1121 H5983 .

11. and gave them over to be men-servants and maid-servants.

11. But when Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 the captains H8269 of the forces H2428 that H834 were with H854 him, heard H8085 of H853 all H3605 the evil H7451 that H834 Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 had done H6213 ,

12. And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, saying,

12. Then they took H3947 H853 all H3605 the men H376 , and went H1980 to fight H3898 with H5973 Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 , and found H4672 him by H413 the great H7227 waters H4325 that H834 are in Gibeon H1391 .

13. Thus saith the Lord; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day wherein I took them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying,

13. Now it came to pass H1961 , that when all H3605 the people H5971 which H834 were with H854 Ishmael H3458 saw H7200 H853 Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 the captains H8269 of the forces H2428 that H834 were with H854 him , then they were glad H8055 .

14. When six years are accomplished, thou shalt set free thy brother the Hebrew, who shall be sold to thee: for he shall serve thee six years, and then thou shalt let him go free: but they hearkened not to me, and inclined not their ear.

14. So all H3605 the people H5971 that H834 Ishmael H3458 had carried away captive H7617 from H4480 Mizpah H4709 cast about H5437 and returned H7725 , and went H1980 unto H413 Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 .

15. And this day they turned to do that which was right in my sight, to proclaim every one the release of his neighbour; and they had concluded a covenant before me, in the house whereon my name is called.

15. But Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 escaped H4422 from H4480 H6440 Johanan H3110 with eight H8083 men H376 , and went H1980 to H413 the Ammonites H1121 H5983 .

16. But ye turned and profaned my name, to bring back every one his servant, and every one his handmaid, whom ye had sent forth free and Probably a Hebraism at their own disposal, to be to you men-servants and maid-servants.

16. Then took H3947 Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 the captains H8269 of the forces H2428 that H834 were with H854 him, H853 all H3605 the remnant H7611 of the people H5971 whom H834 he had recovered H7725 from H4480 H854 Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 , from H4480 Mizpah H4709 , after H310 that he had slain H5221 H853 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 , even mighty H1397 men H376 of war H4421 , and the women H802 , and the children H2945 , and the eunuchs H5631 , whom H834 he had brought again H7725 from Gibeon H4480 H1391 :

17. Therefore thus said the Lord; Ye have not hearkened to me, to proclaim a release every one to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a release to you, to the sword, and to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will give you up to dispersion among all the kingdoms of the earth.

17. And they departed H1980 , and dwelt H3427 in the habitation H1628 of Chimham H3643 , which H834 is by H681 Bethlehem H1035 , to go H1980 to enter into H935 Egypt H4714 ,

18. And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, who have not Or, confirmed, or, set kept my covenant, which they made before me, the calf which they prepared to sacrifice with it,

Because H4480 H6440 of the Chaldeans H3778 : for H3588 they were afraid H3372 of H4480 H6440 them, because H3588 Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 had slain H5221 H853 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 , whom H834 the king H4428 of Babylon H894 made governor H6485 in the land H776 .

19. the princes of Juda, and the men in power, and the priests, and the people;
|

20. I will even give them to their enemies, and their carcases shall be food for the birds of the sky and for the wild beasts of the earth.
|

|
|
21. And I will give Sedekias king of Judea, and their princes, into the hands of their enemies, and the host of the king of Babylon shall come upon them that run away from them.
|
21.
|
|
22. Behold, I will give command, saith the Lord, and will bring them back to this land; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire, and the cities of Juda; and I will make them desolate without inhabitants.
