3. So Israel aligned itself with Baal of Peor, and the LORD's anger burned against Israel.

4. The LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD so that His burning anger may turn away from Israel."

5. So Moses told Israel's judges, "Kill each of the men who aligned themselves with Baal of Peor."

6. An Israelite man came bringing a Midianite woman to his relatives in the sight of Moses and the whole Israelite community while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

7. When Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,

8. followed the Israelite man into the tent, and drove it through both the Israelite man and the woman-- through her belly. Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped,

9. but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.

10. The LORD spoke to Moses,

10. And the LORD H3068 spoke H1696 unto H413 Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,
|

11. "Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the Israelites because he was zealous among them with My zeal, so that I did not destroy the Israelites in My zeal.

11. Phinehas H6372 , the son H1121 of Eleazar H499 , the son H1121 of Aaron H175 the priest H3548 , hath turned my wrath away H7725 H853 H2534 from H4480 H5921 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , while he was zealous H7065 for my sake H854 H7068 among H8432 them , that I consumed H3615 not H3808 H853 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 in my jealousy H7068 .

12. Therefore declare: I grant him My covenant of peace.

12. Wherefore H3651 say H559 , Behold H2009 , I give H5414 unto him H853 my covenant H1285 of peace H7965 :

13. It will be a covenant of perpetual priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites."

13. And he shall have H1961 it , and his seed H2233 after H310 him, even the covenant H1285 of an everlasting H5769 priesthood H3550 ; because H8478 H834 he was zealous H7065 for his God H430 , and made an atonement H3722 for H5921 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 .

14. The name of the slain Israelite man, who was struck dead with the Midianite woman, was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite ancestral house.

14. Now the name H8034 of the Israelite H376 H3478 that was slain H5221 even that H834 was slain H5221 with H854 the Midianitish woman H4084 , was Zimri H2174 , the son H1121 of Salu H5543 , a prince H5387 of a chief H1 house H1004 among the Simeonites H8099 .

15. The name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal head of an ancestral house in Midian.

15. And the name H8034 of the Midianitish H4084 woman H802 that was slain H5221 was Cozbi H3579 , the daughter H1323 of Zur H6698 ; he H1931 was head H7218 over a people H523 , and of a chief H1 house H1004 in Midian H4080 .

16. The LORD told Moses:

16. And the LORD H3068 spoke H1696 unto H413 Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,

17. "Attack the Midianites and strike them dead.
|
17. Vex H6887 H853 the Midianites H4084 , and smite H5221 them:
|
|
18. For they attacked you with the treachery that they used against you in the Peor incident. They did the same in the case involving their sister Cozbi, daughter of the Midianite leader who was killed the day the plague came at Peor."

18. For H3588 they H1992 vex H6887 you with their wiles H5231 , wherewith H834 they have beguiled H5230 you in H5921 the matter H1697 of Peor H6465 , and in H5921 the matter H1697 of Cozbi H3579 , the daughter H1323 of a prince H5387 of Midian H4080 , their sister H269 , which was slain H5221 in the day H3117 of the plague H4046 for Peor's sake H5921 H1697 H6465 .
