1. And Joseph charged the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put the money of each in the mouth of his sack.

2. And put my silver cup into the sack of the youngest, and the price of his corn. And it was done according to the word of Joseph, as he said.

3. The morning dawned, and the men were sent away, they and their asses.

4. And when they had gone out of the city, and were not far off, then Joseph said to his steward, Arise, and pursue after the men; and thou shalt overtake them, and say to them, Why have ye returned evil for good?

5. Why have ye stolen my silver cup? is it not this Gr. in which out of which my lord drinks? and he divines augury with it; ye have accomplished evil in that which ye have done.

5. Is not H3808 this H2088 it in which H834 my lord H113 drinketh H8354 , and whereby indeed he divineth H1931 H5172 H5172 ? ye have done evil H7489 in so H834 doing H6213 .

6. And he found them, and spoke to them according to these words.
|
6. And he overtook H5381 them , and he spoke H1696 unto H413 them H853 these same H428 words H1697 .
|
|
7. And they said to him, Why does our lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word.
|
7. And they said H559 unto H413 him, Wherefore H4100 saith H1696 my lord H113 these H428 words H1697 ? God forbid H2486 that thy servants H5650 should do H4480 H6213 according to this H2088 thing H1697 :

8. If we brought back to thee out of the land of Chanaan the money which we found in our sacks, how should we steal silver or gold out of the house of thy lord?

9. With whomsoever of thy servants thou shalt find the cup, let him die; and, moreover, we will be servants to our lord.

10. And he said, Now then it shall be as ye say; with whomsoever the cup shall be found, he shall be my servant, and ye shall be clear.

11. And they hasted, and took down every man his sack on the ground, and they opened every man his sack.
|

|
|
12. And he searched, beginning from the eldest, until he came to the youngest; and he found the cup in Benjamin’s sack.
|

13. And they rent their garments, and laid each man his sack on his ass, and returned to the city.

|
14. And Judas and his brethren came in to Joseph, while he was yet there, and fell on the ground before him.
|
14. And Judah H3063 and his brethren H251 came H935 to Joseph H3130 's house H1004 ; for he H1931 was yet H5750 there H8033 : and they fell H5307 before H6440 him on the ground H776 .

|
15. And Joseph said to them, What is this thing that ye have done? know ye not that a man such as I can surely divine?
|
15. And Joseph H3130 said H559 unto them, What H4100 deed H4639 is this H2088 that H834 ye have done H6213 ? know H3045 ye not H3808 that H3588 such a man H376 as I H3644 can certainly divine H5172 H5172 ?

|
16. And Judas said, What shall we answer to our lord, or what shall we say, or wherein should we be justified? Gr. but whereas God has discovered the unrighteousness of thy servants; behold, we are slaves to our lord, both we and he with whom the cup has been found.
|
16. And Judah H3063 said H559 , What H4100 shall we say H559 unto my lord H113 ? what H4100 shall we speak H1696 ? or how H4100 shall we clear ourselves H6663 ? 17. And Joseph said, Far be it from me to do this thing; the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; but do ye go up with safety to your father.
|
17. And he said H559 , God forbid H2486 that I should do H4480 H6213 so H2063 : but the man H376 in whose H834 hand H3027 the cup H1375 is found H4672 , he H1931 shall be H1961 my servant H5650 ; and as for you H859 , get you up H5927 in peace H7965 unto H413 your father H1 .

18. And Judas drew near him, and said, I pray, Sir, let thy servant speak a word before thee, and be not angry with thy servant, for thou art next to Pharao.

19. Sir, thou askedst thy servants, saying, Have ye a father or a brother?
|

|
20. And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a son of his old age, a young one, and his brother is dead, and he alone has been left behind to his mother, and his father loves him.

21. And thou saidst to they servants, Bring him down to me, and I will take care of him.
|

22. And we said to my lord, The child will not be able to leave his father; but if he should leave his father, he will die.

|
23. But thou saidst to they servants, Except your younger brother come down with you, ye shall not see my face again.

|
24. And it came to pass, when we went up to thy servant our father, we reported to him the words of our lord.

|
|
25. And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.
|

|
|
26. And we said, We shall not be able to go down; but if our younger brother go down with us, we will go down; for we shall not be able to see the man’s face, our younger brother not being with us.
|
26. And we said H559 , We cannot H3808 H3201 go down H3381 : if H518 our youngest H6996 brother H251 be H3426 with H854 us , then will we go down H3381 : for H3588 we may H3201 not H3808 see H7200 the man H376 's face H6440 , except H369 our youngest H6996 brother H251 be with H854 us.

27. And thy servant our father said to us, Ye know that my wife bore me two sons;
|

28. and one is departed from me; and ye said that he was devoured of wild beasts, and I have not seen him until now.

29. If then ye take this one also from my presence, and an affliction happen to him by the way, then shall ye bring down my old age with sorrow to Gr. Hades the grave.
|
29. And if ye take H3947 H853 this H2088 also H1571 from H4480 H5973 me H6440 , and mischief H611 befall H7136 him , ye shall bring down H3381 H853 my gray hairs H7872 with sorrow H7451 to the grave H7585 .

|
30. Now then, if I should go in to they servant, and our father, and the boy should not be with us, (and his life depends on this lad’s life)
|
30. Now H6258 therefore when I come H935 to H413 thy servant H5650 my father H1 , and the lad H5288 be not H369 with H854 us ; seeing that his life H5315 is bound up H7194 in the lad's life H5315 ;
|
|
31. —it shall even come to pass, when he sees the boy is not with us, that he will die, and thy servants will bring down the old age of thy servant, and our father, with sorrow to the grave.
|
31. It shall come to pass H1961 , when he seeth H7200 that H3588 the lad H5288 is not H369 with us , that he will die H4191 : and thy servants H5650 shall bring down H3381 H853 the gray hairs H7872 of thy servant H5650 our father H1 with sorrow H3015 to the grave H7585 .

32. For thy servant has received the boy in charge from his father, saying, If I bring him not to thee, and place him before thee, I shall be guilty towards my father for ever.
|
32. For H3588 thy servant H5650 became surety H6148 for H853 the lad H5288 unto H4480 H5973 my father H1 , saying H559 , If H518 I bring H935 him not H3808 unto H413 thee , then I shall bear the blame H2398 to my father H1 forever H3605 H3117 .

33. Now then I will remain a servant with thee instead of the lad, a domestic of my lord; but let the lad go up with his brethren.
|
33. Now H6258 therefore , I pray thee H4994 , let thy servant H5650 abide H3427 instead of H8478 the lad H5288 a bondman H5650 to my lord H113 ; and let the lad H5288 go up H5927 with H5973 his brethren H251 .
|
|
34. For how shall I go up to my father, the lad not being with us? lest I behold the evils which will befall my father.
|
34. For H3588 how H349 shall I go up H5927 to H413 my father H1 , and the lad H5288 be not H369 with H854 me? lest peradventure H6435 I see H7200 the evil H7451 that H834 shall come on H4672 H853 my father H1 .
