1. It was now two days before the supper of the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt and the supper of bread without yeast. The religious leaders and the teachers of the Law tried to trap Jesus. They tried to take Him so they could put Him to death.

2. These men said, "This must not happen on the day of the special supper. The people would be against it and make much trouble."
|
2. But G1161 they said G3004 , Not G3361 on G1722 the G3588 feast G1859 day, lest G3379 there be G2071 an uproar G2351 of the G3588 people G2992 .

3. Jesus was in the town of Bethany eating in the house of Simon. Simon was a man with a very bad skin disease. A woman came with a jar of special perfume. She had given much money for this. She broke the jar and poured the special perfume on the head of Jesus.
|

And G2532 being G5607 in G1722 Bethany G963 in G1722 the G3588 house G3614 of Simon G4613 the G3588 leper G3015 , as he G846 sat at meat G2621 , there came G2064 a woman G1135 having G2192 an alabaster box G211 of ointment G3464 of spikenard G4101 G3487 very precious G4185 ; and G2532 she broke G4937 the G3588 box G211 , and poured G2708 it on G2596 his G846 head G2776 .

4. Some of them were angry. They said, "Why was this special perfume wasted?
|
4. And G1161 there were G2258 some G5100 that had indignation G23 within G4314 themselves G1438 , and G2532 said G3004 , Why G5101 was this G3778 waste G684 of the G3588 ointment G3464 made G1096 ?
|
|
5. This perfume could have been sold for much money and given to poor people." They spoke against her.
|
5. For G1063 it G5124 might have been G1410 sold G4097 for more than G1883 three hundred G5145 pence G1220 , and G2532 have been given G1325 to the G3588 poor G4434 . And G2532 they murmured against G1690 her G846 .

6. Jesus said, "Let her alone. Why are you giving her trouble? She has done a good thing to Me.
|
6. And G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 , Let her alone G863 G846 ; why G5101 trouble G3930 G2873 ye her G846 ? she hath wrought G2038 a good G2570 work G2041 on G1519 me G1691 .

7. You will have poor people with you all the time. Whenever you want, you can do something good for them. You will not have Me all the time.
|
7. For G1063 ye have G2192 the G3588 poor G4434 with G3326 you G1438 always G3842 , and G2532 whensoever G3752 ye will G2309 ye may G1410 do G4160 them G846 good G2095 : but G1161 me G1691 ye have G2192 not G3756 always G3842 .

8. She did what she could. She put this perfume on My body to make Me ready for the grave.

8. She hath done G4160 what G3739 she G3778 could G2192 : she is come aforehand G4301 to anoint G3462 my G3450 body G4983 to G1519 the G3588 burying G1780 .

9. For sure, I tell you, wherever this Good News is preached in all the world, this woman will be remembered for what she has done."

10. Judas Iscariot was one of the twelve followers. He went to the head religious leaders of the Jews to talk about how he might hand Jesus over to them.

10. And G2532 Judas G2455 Iscariot G2469 , one G1520 of the G3588 twelve G1427 , went G565 unto G4314 the G3588 chief priests G749 , to G2443 betray G3860 him G846 unto them G846 .

11. When the leaders heard it, they were glad. They promised to give Judas money. Then he looked for a way to hand Jesus over.

12. The first day of the supper of bread without yeast was the day to kill an animal. It was for the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt. His followers said to Jesus, "What place do You want us to make ready for You to eat this special supper?"

13. Jesus sent two of His followers on ahead and said to them, "Go into the city. There a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.

14. He will go into a house. You say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks, "Where is the room you keep for friends, where I can eat this special supper with My followers?" '

15. He will take you to a large room on the second floor with everything in it. Make it ready for us."

16. The followers went from there and came into the city. They found everything as Jesus had said. They made things ready for the special supper.
|
16. And G2532 his G846 disciples G3101 went forth G1831 , and G2532 came G2064 into G1519 the G3588 city G4172 , and G2532 found G2147 as G2531 he had said G2036 unto them G846 : and G2532 they made ready G2090 the G3588 passover G3957 .

17. In the evening He came with the twelve followers.
|

|
|
18. They sat at the table and ate. Jesus said, "For sure, I tell you, one of you will hand Me over to be killed. He is eating with Me."
|

19. They were very sad. They said to Him one after the other, "Is it I?"
|
19. And G1161 they G3588 began G756 to be sorrowful G3076 , and G2532 to say G3004 unto him G846 one by one G1527 , Is G3385 it I G1473 ? and G2532 another G243 said, Is G3385 it I G1473 ?

20. He said to them, "It is one of the twelve followers. It is the one who is putting his hand with mine into the same dish.
|
20. And G1161 he G3588 answered G611 and said G2036 unto them G846 , It is one G1520 of G1537 the G3588 twelve G1427 , that dippeth G1686 with G3326 me G1700 in G1519 the G3588 dish G5165 .

21. The Son of Man is going away as it is written of Him. But it will be bad for that man who hands the Son of Man over to be killed! It would have been better if he had not been born!"

22. As they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread. He gave thanks and broke it in pieces. He gave it to them and said, "Take, eat, this is My body."

23. Then He took the cup and gave thanks. He gave it to them and they all drank from it.

24. He said to them, "This is My blood of the New Way of Worship which is given for many.
|

|
25. For sure, I tell you, that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the holy nation of God."

26. After they sang a song, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
|

27. Jesus said to them, "All of you will be ashamed of Me and leave Me tonight. For it is written, 'I will kill the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will spread everywhere.' (Zechariah 13:7)

28. After I am raised from the dead, I will go before you into the country of Galilee."

29. Peter said to Him, "Even if all men are ashamed of You and leave You, I never will."
|

30. Jesus said to him, "For sure, I tell you, that today, even tonight, before a rooster crows two times, you will say three times you do not know Me."

31. Peter spoke with strong words, "Even if I have to die with You, I will never say that I do not know You." All the followers said the same thing.
|
31. But G1161 he G3588 spake G3004 the more G3123 vehemently G1537 G4053 , If G1437 I G3165 should G1163 die with G4880 thee G4671 , I will not deny thee in any wise G3364 G1161 . Likewise G5615 also G2532 said G3004 they all G3956 .

32. They came to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to His followers, "You sit here while I pray."
|
32. And G2532 they came G2064 to G1519 a place G5564 which G3739 was named G3686 Gethsemane G1068 : and G2532 he saith G3004 to his G848 disciples G3101 , Sit G2523 ye here G5602 , while G2193 I shall pray G4336 .

33. He took Peter and James and John with Him. He began to have much sorrow and a heavy heart.
|
33. And G2532 he taketh G3880 with G3326 him G1438 Peter G4074 and G2532 James G2385 and G2532 John G2491 , and G2532 began G756 to be sore amazed G1568 , and G2532 to be very heavy G85 ;

34. He said to them, "My soul is very sad. My soul is so full of sorrow I am ready to die. You stay here and watch."

35. He went a little farther and got down with His face on the ground. He prayed that this time of suffering might pass from Him if it could.

36. He said, "Father, You can do all things. Take away what must happen to Me. Even so, not what I want, but what You want."

37. Then Jesus came to the followers and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to watch one hour?
|

38. Watch and pray so that you will not be tempted. Man's spirit wants to do this, but the body does not have the power to do it."
|

39. Again Jesus went away and prayed saying the same words.
|

40. He came back and found them sleeping again. Their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to Him.
|
40. And G2532 when he returned G5290 , he found G2147 them G846 asleep G2518 again G3825 , ( for G1063 their G846 eyes G3778 were G2258 heavy G916 ,) neither G2532 G3756 wist G1492 they what G5101 to answer G611 him G846 .

|
41. He came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! Listen, the time has come when the Son of Man will be handed over to sinners.
|

42. Get up and let us go. See! The man who will hand Me over to the head religious leader is near."

43. At once, while Jesus was talking, Judas came. He was one of the twelve followers. He came with many other men who had swords and sticks. They came from the head religious leaders of the Jews and the teachers of the Law and the leaders of the people.
|
43. And G2532 immediately G2112 , while he G846 yet G2089 spake G2980 , cometh G3854 Judas G2455 , one G1520 of the G3588 twelve G1427 , and G2532 with G3326 him G846 a great G4183 multitude G3793 with G3326 swords G3162 and G2532 staves G3586 , from G3844 the G3588 chief priests G749 and G2532 the G3588 scribes G1122 and G2532 the G3588 elders G4245 .

44. The man who was going to hand Jesus over gave the men something to look for. He said, "The Man I kiss is the One. Take hold of Him and take Him away."
|
44. And G1161 he that betrayed G3860 him G846 had given G1325 them G846 a token G4953 , saying G3004 , Whomsoever G3739 G302 I shall kiss G5368 , that same G846 is G2076 he; take G2902 him G846 , and G2532 lead him away safely G520 G806 .

45. At once Judas went straight to Jesus and said, "Teacher!" and kissed Him.
|

46. Then they put their hands on Him and took Him.
|

47. One of the followers of Jesus who stood watching took his sword. He hit the servant owned by the head religious leader and cut off his ear.
|
47. And G1161 one G1520 of them that stood by G3936 drew G4685 a sword G3162 , and smote G3817 a servant G1401 of the G3588 high priest G749 , and G2532 cut off G851 his G846 ear G5621 .

48. Jesus said to them, "Have you come with swords and sticks to take Me as if I were a robber?
|
48. And G2532 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said G2036 unto them G846 , Are ye come out G1831 , as G5613 against G1909 a thief G3027 , with G3326 swords G3162 and G2532 with staves G3586 to take G4815 me G3165 ?

49. I have been with you every day teaching in the house of God. You never took hold of Me. But this has happened as the Holy Writings said it would happen."
|
49. I was G2252 daily G2596 G2250 with G4314 you G5209 in G1722 the G3588 temple G2411 teaching G1321 , and G2532 ye took G2902 me G3165 not G3756 : but G235 G2443 the G3588 Scriptures G1124 must be fulfilled G4137 .

50. Then all His followers left Him and ran away.
|
50. And G2532 they all G3956 forsook G863 him G846 , and fled G5343 .
|
|
51. A young man was following Him with only a piece of cloth around his body. They put their hands on the young man.
|
51. And G2532 there followed G190 him G846 a G1520 certain G5100 young man G3495 , having G4016 a linen cloth G4616 cast about G1909 his naked G1131 body ; and G2532 the G3588 young men G3495 laid hold on G2902 him G846 :

52. Leaving the cloth behind, he ran away with no clothes on.
|
52. And G1161 he G3588 left G2641 the G3588 linen cloth G4616 , and fled G5343 from G575 them G846 naked G1131 .

|
53. They led Jesus away to the head religious leader. All the religious leaders and other leaders and the teachers of the Law were gathered there.
|
53. And G2532 they led Jesus away G520 G2424 to G4314 the G3588 high priest G749 : and G2532 with him G846 were assembled G4905 all G3956 the G3588 chief priests G749 and G2532 the G3588 elders G4245 and G2532 the G3588 scribes G1122 .

|
54. But Peter followed a long way behind as they went to the house of the head religious leader. He sat with the helpers and got warm by the fire.
|
54. And G2532 Peter G4074 followed G190 him G846 afar off G575 G3113 , even G2193 into G1519 the G3588 palace G833 of the G3588 high priest G749 : and G2532 he sat G2258 G4775 with G3326 the G3588 servants G5257 , and G2532 warmed G2328 himself at G4314 the G3588 fire G5457 .

55. The religious leaders and all the court were looking for something against Jesus. They wanted to find something so they could kill Him. But they could find nothing.
|
55. And G1161 the G3588 chief priests G749 and G2532 all G3650 the G3588 council G4892 sought G2212 for witness G3141 against G2596 Jesus G2424 to put him to death G2289 G846 ; and G2532 found G2147 none G3756 .
|

56. Many came and told false things about Him, but their words did not agree.
|
56. For G1063 many G4183 bare false witness G5576 against G2596 him G846 , but G2532 their G846 witness G3141 agreed not together G2258 G3756 G2470 .
|
|
57. Some got up and said false things against Him. They said,
|
57. And G2532 there arose G450 certain G5100 , and bare false witness G5576 against G2596 him G846 , saying G3004 ,
|
|
58. "We have heard Him say, 'I will destroy the house of God that was made with hands. In three days I will build another that is not made with hands.' ''
|
58. We G2249 heard G191 him G846 say G3004 , I G1473 will destroy G2647 this G5126 temple G3485 that is made with hands G5499 , and G2532 within G1223 three G5140 days G2250 I will build G3618 another G243 made without hands G886 .

59. Even these who spoke against Him were not able to agree.
|
59. But G2532 neither G3761 so G3779 did their G846 witness G3141 agree together G2258 G2470 .
|
|
60. The head religious leader stood up in front of the people. He asked Jesus, "Have You nothing to say? What about the things these men are saying against You?"
|
60. And G2532 the G3588 high priest G749 stood up G450 in G1519 the G3588 midst G3319 , and asked G1905 Jesus G2424 , saying G3004 G3756 , Answerest G611 thou nothing G3762 ? what G5101 is it which these G3778 witness against G2649 thee G4675 ?

61. Jesus said nothing. Again the head religious leader asked Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Holy One?"
|
61. But G1161 he G3588 held his peace G4623 , and G2532 answered G611 nothing G3762 . Again G3825 the G3588 high priest G749 asked G1905 him G846 , and G2532 said G3004 unto him G846 , Art G1488 thou G4771 the G3588 Christ G5547 , the G3588 Son G5207 of the G3588 Blessed G2128 ?

62. Jesus said, "I am! And you will see the Son of Man seated on the right side of the All-powerful God. You will see Him coming again in the clouds of the sky."

63. Then the head religious leader tore his clothes apart. He said, "Do we need other people to speak against Him?
|

|
|
64. You have heard Him speak as if He were God! What do you think?" They all said He was guilty of death.

65. Some began to spit on Him. They covered Jesus' face, and they hit Him. They said, "Tell us what is going to happen." Soldiers hit Him with their hands.

66. Peter was outside in the yard. One of the servant-girls of the head religious leader came.
|
66. And G2532 as Peter G4074 was G5607 beneath G2736 in G1722 the G3588 palace G833 , there cometh G2064 one G3391 of the G3588 maids G3814 of the G3588 high priest G749 :

67. She saw Peter getting warm. She looked at him and said, "You were with Jesus of Nazareth."
|
67. And G2532 when she saw G1492 Peter G4074 warming G2328 himself , she looked upon G1689 him G846 , and said G3004 , And G2532 thou G4771 also wast G2258 with G3326 Jesus G2424 of Nazareth G3479 .

68. Peter lied, saying, "I do not know Jesus and do not understand what you are talking about." As he went out, a rooster crowed.

69. The servant-girl saw him again. She said to the people standing around, "This man is one of them."
|
69. And G2532 a maid G3814 saw G1492 him G846 again G3825 , and began G756 to say G3004 to them that stood by G3936 , This G3778 is G2076 one of G1537 them G846 .

70. He lied again saying that he did not know Jesus. Later, those who stood around said to Peter again, "For sure you are one of them. You are from the country of Galilee. You talk like they do.''
